More info: Blackpool has seven miles of sandy beaches with three large piers and the 500ft tall Blackpool Tower. The main beach lies between the South and Central piers and is backed by a promenade. The well known trams run along this strip and become the centrepieces of the Blackpool Illuminations at the end of every summer.

Blackpools North Pier is home to the North Pier Theatre, the Victorian tea room, a two-tier Venetian Carousel and ice cream parlour and an arcade with the famous penny slots. This is also the location for the famous Blackpool Tower.

Central Pier is home to arcade games, a funfair and the popular Funhouse Family Bar. Its most striking feature is its 108ft-high ferris wheel, which gives amazing views of Blackpool and across the Irish Sea.

The South Pier is a brilliant attraction for families, particularly for the Blue Flag beach opposite Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The whole pier is a mini theme park, featuring go-karting, dodgems, waltzers, the Crazy Mouse rollercoaster, Skycoaster, Skyscreamer bungee ride, Spider Mountain climbing frame and Maxibounce trampolines.

Blackpool has had a long association with lights and electricity and was the first town to have electric street lighting. Visitors first came to marvel at Blackpool’s Lights in 1879 when just eight arc lamps bathed the Promenade. Blackpool Illuminations is an annual lights festival, held each autumn and dubbed the greatest free light show on earth and the Switch-On ceremony is famous, marking the start of the illuminations.

Over one million lamps are used across the display and the cable and wiring for the Lights stretches more than 200 miles. These days the display incorporates micro controllers, LEDs, lasers and video which has added a new dimension to the display.
