More info: Cuxhaven is one of the largest fishing ports of Germany and is also the headquarters of the country’s fish-processing industry. Cuxhaven is also a North Sea beach resort, a health spa, and a base for sailing expeditions to the Frisian Islands, including the nearby Lower Saxony and Hamburg Wadden Sea national parks.
Historic buildings in Cuxhaven include the 14th-century Ritzebuttel Castle, which has a regional museum. On the island of Neuwerk is a 14th-century lighthouse, the oldest on the German coast and Kugelbake Fort, built in 1869 to protect Elbe shipping, is now a museum.
The Cuxhaven Pier is called the Alte Liebe (“Old Love”) and is one of the towns prime photographic spots. It has a beautiful panoramic view of the bay with massive cruise and cargo ships sailing in and out of town.
The Elb-Link ferry travels along the Cuxhaven coastline and takes between 80 and 120 minutes, depending on the weather conditions and the currents. It offers stunning views of both the city skyline and the busy sea route in front of it.
