Famous in the 1950s as the "Clam Capital of the World" where clams were in such abundance, they were harvested with plows - sadly today at Pismo Beach, there are few to be found due to over-harvesting. However, Pismo Beach still holds the Clam Festival every October.
The 6-mile-long beach at Pismo Beach is popular for swimming, surfing, sea kayaking, kite boarding, fishing, and clamming. Pismo beach is home to the oldest surf shop on the Central Coast- Pismo Beach Surf Shop.
Just south of Pismo Beach is Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area which has 5½ miles of beach open for vehicle use and acres of sand dunes allowing 4-wheel drive vehicles.
