More info: Close to Praia de Forte is Projeto Tamar, a non-governmental organization which protects sea turtles. The base is open year round with biologists managing the nests from July to September when the newly hatched turtles make a dash for the sea.

The fort which originally gave Praia de Forte its name, is no longer standing but visitors can see the 16th-century Garcia D'Avila Castle, located on a hilltop and just two kilometers from the village. Also known as Casa da Torre, it is the only construction with medieval characteristics in the Americas.
