More info: The Venetians occupied Kefalonia for many centuries and later followed the French and the British. All these foreign cultures had a great influence on the island and its people. Argostoli was almost entirely destroyed by the earthquake of 1953, and the British helped rebuild much of its infrastructure. Before the earthquake, many beautiful mansions decorated the town with Venetian Architecture and Renaissance, Rococo, and Baroque elements.
The two main ports of Kefalonia are Sami and Poros, serving routes between the island and mainland Greece, as well as other islands of the Ionian Sea. Argostoli and Lixouri are local ports.
To the east of Argostoli, at the end of the bay and beneath the Castle of St. George, sits the Koutavos Lagoon which is a Nature Reserve and a feeding ground for the Loggerhead turtles.
