St. Michaels harbour and some of the homes, date back to the mid-1600's. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is home to the Hooper Strait Lighthouse, originally built in 1879 to light the way for boats passing through the shallow, dangerous shoals of Hooper Strait. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is made up of 12 buildings, including a boatyard where wooden ships are still built and where craftsmen are trained to keep the tradition alive.

St Michaels, has a rich trading and shipbuilding history dating from the 1630s. The ship builders specialised in constructing fast sailing ships which later were called Baltimore Clippers and many of these were used to defend Chesapeake Bay from attacks by the British Navy.
