More info: Lake Tahoe is a freshwater lake located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is the second deepest lake in the United States with an average depth of 305mtrs. The lake stretches a distance of 35kms with two thirds of the lake in California and one third in Nevada. At its longest and widest, Lake Tahoe measures 22 miles (35 km) by 12 miles (19km) and the shoreline circumference of the lake is 72 miles (116km). There are 63 tributaries draining into Lake Tahoe with only one outlet at the Truckee River in Tahoe City.
Lake Tahoe attracts visitors from around the world with activities in summer including hiking, windsurfing, golfing, fishing and swimming and in winter provides some of the best skiing in the world with snowfall at alpine skiing levels averaging 600 inches a year.
The amount of water that evaporates from Lake Tahoe each day is around 330 million gallons which could supply a city the size of Los Angeles for 5 years. The water is 99.994% pure, making it one of the purest large lakes in the world. Lake Tahoe is over 2 million years old and is ounted among the 20 oldest lakes in the world.
