More Info: Magadan is a port town and the administrative center of Magadan Oblast and is located on the Sea of Okhotsk in Nagayev Bay. It serves as a gateway to the Kolyma region. The Magadanka river, a 192km long river flowing to the Sea of Okhotsk passes the city.
Permafrost and tundra cover most of the region. The climate of Magadan is subarctic with winters being prolonged and very cold, with up to six months of sub-zero high temperatures, so that the soil remains permanently frozen.
The Port of Magadan is second largest seaport in the North-East of the Russia and operates all year round with the help of icebreakers. Some say that the main street of the city - Lenin street - is the longest street in the world (2930 km), because it connects to the Kolyma highway, also known as "The Road of Bones". The highway once delivered tens of thousands of prisoners to the work camps of Stalin's gulag. Its nickname "The Road of Bones" comes from the estimated 250,000 lives lost in the building of the remote roadway.
