More info: Manarola is a small town in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, northern Italy. It is the second-smallest and the oldest of the famous Cinque Terre towns. Cinque Terre is a rugged coastline on the Italian Riviera and consists of the five hillside towns Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, all of which are connected by footpaths. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Manarola sits on rocks 70 mtrs above the bright blue Ligurian Sea. It has a small harbour with a boat ramp, pretty multicoloured houses, a small piazza, winding steep streets and the church of San Lorenzo built in 1338. The church bell tower was used in ancient times to watch out for raiding pirates.
Via dell'Amore “ The Way of Love is a footpath that begins (or ends) in Manarola and leads to Riomaggiore. Cutting along the cliffs above the coastline, the path is decorated with "love locks" - padlocks left by hopeful couples as a gesture of eternal love.
Manarola's primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The local wine, called Sciacchetrà, is especially renowned and references have been made to it in Roman writings. In more recent years, Manarola and the other Cinque Terre towns have become important destinations for tourists.
