More info: Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain peak in Maine at nearly a mile (5,267 feet or 1,606 m) and was formed by underground magma. Named by the Penobscot Indians, Katahdin’s name means “Greatest Mountain.” Mount Katahdin is also the most northern point of the Appalachian Trail, and the final point.
Mount Katahdin lies in Baxter State Park, 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Millinocket, in Piscataquis county, in the east-central part of Maine. Governor Percival Baxter, heir to a large real estate and fish canning fortune, bought the land around the mountain and deeded it to the people of Maine.
In 1764, Joseph Chadwick, a surveyor, recorded the first non-native sighting of Mount Katahdin in a report of his explorations. Charles Turner, Junior and a party of eleven made the first recorded climb of Mount Katahdin in 1804.
