More info: Mount Washington is in Mount Washington State Park and is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288.2 ft. The mountain is well known for its erratic weather and still holds the record for the highest measured wind speed not associated with a tornado or tropical cyclone. These extreme winds also contribute to the mountain's very short treeline, with elevations as low as 4,400 feet being too hostile to support any plant life more than a few inches in height.

The Appalachian Trail crosses the summit of Mount Washington and the area is very popular with hikers. However, scores of hikers have died on the mountain in all seasons, due to harsh and rapidly changing conditions, inadequate equipment, and failure to plan for the wide variety of conditions that can occur .

The Mount Washington Observatory was built on the summit in 1932. The observatory makes prominent use of the slogan "Home of the World's Worst Weather," a claim that originated with a 1940 article in Appalachia magazine by Charles Brooks, the man generally given the majority of credit for creating the Mount Washington Observatory.
