More info: The Needles are one of the Isle of Wight's most iconic sights. They are a row of three chalk stacks rising 30m out of the sea, on the western extremity of the island, in the English Channel. They lie just to the southwest of Alum Bay.
The formation takes its name from a fourth needle-shaped pillar which was called Lot's Wife and which collapsed in a storm in 1764. The remaining rocks are not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck. The Needles Lighthouse at the outer, western end of the formation was built in 1859 and automated in 1994
During Storm Eunice on 18 February 2022, the highest recorded wind gust in England was provisionally recorded at The Needles, at 122 miles per hour (196 km/h)
