More info: Portland Head Lighthouse in maine, has a long history of protecting Portland and the adjacent area. In 1776, the new Town of Cape Elizabeth posted a guard of eight soldiers at Portland Head to warn citizens of coming British attacks. In 1787, the General Court of Massachusetts provided $750 to begin construction of a lighthouse. In 1790 the United States Government took over the responsibility of all lighthouses and completed the building.

The original tower at Portland Head measured 72' from base to lantern deck and was lit with 16 whale oil lamps. It was first lit on January 10, 1791. Today, Maine's oldest lighthouse is still active, guiding ships into Portland Harbour.

Aside from Portland Head Lighthouse, there are four additional lighthouses in the area. Spring Point Ledge Light, built in 1897 which is a caisson style light station at the end of a rock breakwater. Ram Island Ledge light, constructed in 1905. Beyond Ram Island, about 10 miles out and only visible on a clear day, is Halfway Rock light station which was first lit in 1871 and Cape Elizabeth light, first lit in 1874.
