More info: Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the five Cinque Terre towns. The Cinque Terre comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Riomaggiore dates from the early thirteenth century and is in the Riviera di Levante region. The picturesque town has colorful stone houses that seem stacked on top of one another, and a harbor filled with traditional fishing boats.

The Castle situated above Riomaggiore was built in the 1200’s as protection from the constant raids by pirates, it consists of two towers and a wall connecting them. In the 1800’s with the arrival of Napoleon and the belief that the dead should not be buried within the town walls, the castle was reutilized to serve as a cemetery.
