The Windermere Ferry is the only car ferry in the Lake District and takes about 10 minutes to cross the centre of the lake. The Windermere ferry links the busy eastern shore of the lake to the peaceful countryside between Windermere and Coniston on the west.
More info: The Windermere Ferry is a cable ferry which crosses Lake Windermere at about its midpoint, from Ferry Nab in Bowness-on-Windermere to Ferry House at Far Sawrey, a distance of some 490 metres (540 yd).
There has been a ferry at the site of the current Windermere Ferry for more than 500 years. The first cable ferry, powered by steam, commenced operation in 1870.
The current ferry named Mallard, was built in 1990 and can carry up to 18 cars and over 100 passengers. The ferry is owned and operated by Cumbria County Council. There is a service from one side to the other every 30 minutes and the ferry operates every day except Christmas and Boxing Day.
