A container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge at around 1:30am on Tuesday 26th March, 2024, causing the bridge to collapse. The container ship lost power before the accident happened.
The bridge spanned the lower Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbour carrying Maryland Route 695 in Baltimore.

More info: The Francis Scott Key Bridge was named after the American lawyer who wrote the lyrics of the national anthem. Construction of the bridge started in 1972 and it was completed in March 1977. At that time, construction costs were $141 million, which is roughly the equivalent of $735 million today.
Maryland plans to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge in just over four years at an estimated cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion.
