More info: The Grand Canal in Venice goes from San Marco Basilica to Santa Chiara Church and divides the city into two parts. It is just over 3 km (2 miles) long and between 30 and 70 metres (100 and 225 feet) wide, with an average depth of 5 metres (17 feet)

Traffic on the canal includes the famous gondolas, public water buses, private water taxis, emergency service boats and barges which deiver goods throughout Venice.

The buildings on the Grand Canal date from the 13th century and most open directly onto the canal, making their fronts accessible only by boat.
