More info: The King Harry Ferry is a chain ferry which crosses the Carrick Roads reach of the estuary of the River Fal and operated by the King Harry Steam Ferry Company Ltd. The ferry connects St Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula with Feock, Truro and Falmouth saving traffic the alternative 26-mile (42 km) detour via the city of Truro. The King Harry Ferry carries 300,000 cars every year and is one of only five chain ferries in England. The latest ferry is the 7th to operate on the service since 1888.
The chains guiding the King Harry ferry are 270mtrs long, and have to be replaced due to wera and tear, at a cost of 16,000 pound a pair. The chains are pulled by drive wheels which are driven by hydraulic motors which in turn are powered by one of three ultra efficient diesel engines. The ferry crossing takes around 10 minutes.
