More info: Brest is a city and administrative centre of Brest oblast (region) and is located in the south-west corner of Belarus. Brest Oblast is the western gate of Belarus and is an important tourist, transit, industrial and agricultural region. It borders Ukraine in the south and Poland in the west. Brest was part of the Belarusian SSR until the breakup of the USSR in 1991. Brest is now a part of independent Belarus.
Brest is one of the oldest cities in Belarus which over the centuries has repeatedly became a part of different states and has been destroyed and rebuilt during the process. This is reflected in the architecture from the ancient settlement of Berestye to the buildings of the Imperial Brest-Litovsk, the Polish Brest-on-the-Bug and the Soviet Brest.
Brest lies astride the Mukhavets River which flows west through the city, dividing it into north and south, and meets the Bug River at the Brest Fortress. To the east of Brest, the Dnieper–Bug Canal was built in the mid-nineteenth century to join the river to Pina, a tributary of the Pripyat River which in turn drains into the Dnieper.
The 19th-century Brest Hero Fortress is a celebrated site of Soviet resistance during WWII. During Operation Barbarossa in the early days of WWII, a small band of soldiers gallantly held off a superior Nazi force at Brest Fortress and became Soviet legends. Today the fortress is a popular visitor attraction with a complex of museums and Soviet memorials.
