Since its founding, Hammerfest has defended its position as the world's most northern town. It sits roughly on the same latitude as the most northern parts of Siberia and Alaska.

Hammerfest is where visitors may experience the northern lights in the winter or the midnight sun in the summer. The winters are long and dark, and, as early as 1891, Hammerfest became the first town in Norway to have electric street lights.

Hammerfest has a tradition of fishing and hunting, but today the economy is driven by the industrial facility on Melkøya island where natural gas from the Snohvit gas field in the Barents Sea is processed before being exported across Europe.
