More info: Hastings is a seaside resort town in East Sussex on The English Channel coast. Hastings has long had a close relationship with the ocean, and although its fishing industry has declined, it still has the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe and is one of Britain’s oldest fishing ports. Located at one end of the pebble beach is a row of preserved and historic "net shops" – the traditional tall sheds or "lofts" used by fishermen to store their nets. Some of these black tar painted structures have stood for centuries.
Hastings Castle was the first fortification to be built after William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066. The remains of the castle are perched above the town's West Hill. The castles near 1,000 year history includes sieges, invasions, violent weather and erosion and bombing in WW II. The West Hill Lift is a funicular railway running from George street up to the castle.
Below Hastings castle is the Old Town with narrow streets, ancient churches and buildings and half timber framed houses mixed with antique shops, cafes, tea rooms and pubs.
The second funicular railway of Hastings is the East Hill Lift which goes from the fishing beach up to Hastings Country Park, where on clear days visitors can see Beachy Head to Dungeness and as far as Folkestone and the coast of France. The Park is a nature reserve covering 345 hectares of coastal gill woodlands, open pasture and cliff top grassland.
