More info: The cheeses produced by the Creamery in Hawes have Protected Food Name Status which means the term "Yorkshire Wensleydale" can only be used for cheese that is made in Wensleydale. Over 40 farms in the general area supply the Creamery with milk.
On its southern edge, Hawes merges with the small village of Gayle with its historic 18th century former cotton mill alongside Gayle Beck and now a Grade II listed building.
The Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes is attached to the old Hawes railway station of the Wensleydale Railway, and tells how the landscape and people of the Yorkshire Dales have evolved over thousands of years. A Yorkshire Dales National Park Centre is also housed at the museum.
Just north of the town is Hardraw Force, a visitor attraction which claims fame as "England's highest single-drop waterfall". It was used in scenes from the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. it has a Heritage Centre in the grounds of the falls.
