More info: Istanbul is the only city in the world which is located in the two continents of Europe and Asia. On the western side of the Bosphorus Strait is Europe and on the other side is Asia.

Throughout most of its long history, Istanbul was known as Constantinople. It was named after Constantine the Great, the ruler who first made the city his capital. In 1930, the city was officially renamed Istanbul.

One of Istanbul’s most recognisable landmarks is the Blue Mosque or Sultanahmet Mosque. Istanbul has the most mosques of any city in Turkey, with a total of 3,112. Mosques are allowed to be built with no more than six minarets, and the Blue Mosque is one of just a few to have the full six. The Blue Mosque was built opposite Hagia Sophia to surpass it in grandeur and signify the triumph of an Islamic monument over a converted Christian church. It forms a symbol of the intricate and complex history of Istanbul, a city where East meets West.

The Blue Mosque is so called due to the more than 20.000 blue coloured handmade Iznik ceramic tiles, in more than 50 tulip designs, that decorate the interior walls of the mosque.
