Manhattan is a long island which is bounded by the Hudson River to the west, the East River to the east and Harlem to the north. It covers an area of 22.83 square miles (59.1 km²). Manhattan is relatively easy to navigate with its grid system - avenues travel north and south, streets travel east and west and Fifth Avenue runs down the centre. It is divided in to three areas :
Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the borough and the point where New York was founded. This area is home to the business district and various governing bodies. It is home to the Whitney Museum of American Art, along with One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. It also has many ferry terminals, including routes visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Midtown Manhattan runs from 14th street to the southern part of Central Park. It has the greatest amount of skyscrapers such as the legendary Empire State Building as well as iconic attractions like Times Square, the Museum of Modern Art, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal and the Flatiron Building.
Upper Manhattan starts in Central Park and finishes in 96th Street. Historically it has been one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in New York, and it is notable for its gorgeous architecture and upscale boutiques. The western part also includes Columbia University and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.
