Portimao historically, has been a fishing, fish processing and shipbuilding centre but has since developed into an important tourist and leisure centre. The old bustling fishing docks have been transformed in to a promenade leading to tree-lined plazas in the old town.
On the opposite side of the Araba River to Portimao is Ferragudo which is a traditional fishing village. During the summer a ferry crosses over there from Portimao.
The principal church of Portimao, the Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, is positioned on the highest point of the city. It was originally constructed in 1470 but was severeley damaged, like much of Portimao in the 1755 earthquake. The only remaining Gothic feature is the main portal and inside are decorative Azulejos paintings.
