More info: The city San Miguel de Allende is in the state of Guanajuato, and lies 179 miles (288 km) northwest of Mexico City. It is a colonial-era city known for its baroque Spanish architecture, thriving arts scene and cultural festivals. In the city’s historic, cobblestoned center lies the neo-Gothic Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, whose dramatic pink towers rise above the main square, El Jardín.
The name of the city comes from two people: 16th-century friar Juan de San Miguel, and a martyr of Mexican Independence, Ignacio Allende, who was born in a house facing the city's central plaza. San Miguel de Allende was also a critical epicentre during the historic Chichimeca War (1540–1590) where the Chichimeca Confederation defeated the Spanish Empire in the initial colonisation war.
With temperate weather and wonderful light, described by some as “eternal spring,” many of San Miguel de Allende’s restaurants and bars are located on rooftops, offering beautiful city views, especially at night.
The state of Guanajuato is the fourth largest wine producer in Mexico attracting more wine lovers each year. The region produces some 700 thousand bottles annually with 135 labels.
