More info: Skid Row is a neighbourhood in Downtown Los Angeles that contains one of the largest stable populations (about 4,200-8,000) of people experiencing homelessness in the United States and has been known for its condensed homeless population since the 1930s. Its long history of police raids, targeted city initiatives, and homelessness advocacy make it one of the most distinctive districts in Los Angeles.
City officials established Skid Row in 1976 as an unofficial containment zone, where shelters and services for unhoused people would be tolerated. Many Los Angeles-based service organizations – such as the Weingart Center – are based in Skid Row.
The Weingart Center is a non profit agency that provides homeless individuals with the basic tools necessary to stabilize their lives, secure income, and find permanent housing. Their mission is to empower and transform lives by delivering innovative solutions to break the cycle of homelessness.
