Times Square is famous for its bright neon lights and signage in the heart of the Big Apple which epitomises New York’s city-that-never-sleeps attitude. It is also one of the world's busiest pedestrian areas and the hub of Broadway Theatre.
The Square took its current name in 1904 when The New York Times opened its offices in the Times Tower on the square. Along with the introduction of neon signage in the 1920s, Times Square became the pioneer of electric signs and advertising. Among the square’s most famous signs were those depicting a huge coffee cup, out of which real steam rose, and a cigarette-smoking man, blowing steam-generated smoke rings. Since the late 20th century the tenants in Times Square buildings have been required by law to display eye-catching signs which has resulted in todays 24 hour digital light extravagnza.
Times Square draws around 50 million visitors a year and around 340,000 pedestrians pass through Times Square on a typical day. Times Square is the world's second most visited tourist attraction, behind the Las Vegas Strip. The lights of Times Square can be seen from outer space and if you want to purchase an LED sign in the square, it will cost between $1.1 million and $4 million per year.
